Since then, the City of Rutland was formed, creating three separate incorporated entities in the vicinity: West Rutland, City of Rutland, and Rutland Town. West Rutland is very much its own town with its own identity, and a focus on community building and vitalization. Recent years have seen industrial developments, a new Recreation Area, and a marsh conservation project aimed at protecting rare bird species and other wildlife dwelling there.
